Katarina Witt began to ice skate at the age five. She was able to prove her talent and gain entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted children. It was here that she got to know their coach Jutta Muller. Witt had her first breakthrough season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. From that moment on the elegance and grace of her skating captured the eye of all. Her dominance began in the sport. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly race to claim the women's figure skating gold medal. In a tighter competition four years later, Witt took home the medal. Even though she fell short in the free-skating contest, medal was given to her for her performances on the mandatory figures and the short program. Witt was the first female to be crowned champion in male and female figure skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a film actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she was not able to take home a medal, the young woman impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
